How to Get to Andorra from Spain and France

By car from Barcelona (3h), bus from Madrid (7h) or a flight to Toulouse or Barcelona… All your options to reach the Principality without surprises.

By car from Spain and France

The car remains the most popular way to reach Andorra, especially from Spain. The Principality has no airport or railway station of its own —the Pyrenean geography makes it impossible— but it is well connected by road to both neighbouring countries.

From Barcelona

The usual route follows the AP-7 to the Túnel del Cadí (toll) and then the C-16 and N-145 to the border at Sant Julià de Lòria. The distance is about 215 km and the driving time under normal conditions is 2h30-3h. The toll for the Túnel del Cadí is around 11-13 euros (2024 price, check for updates).

From Madrid

The standard route goes through Zaragoza on the A-2, then the N-2 to Lleida, the C-13 to la Seu d'Urgell and the N-145 into Andorra. That is about 620 km and roughly 6-7 hours of driving. An alternative is the AP-2 and A-22 through northern Aragon, slightly longer in distance but easier in terms of traffic.

From Toulouse (France)

From the south of France, the usual entry point is Pas de la Casa. Toulouse is about 180 km away via the N-20 through Foix and Pas de la Casa. The driving time is around 2h30 under normal conditions, although the final mountain stretch can slow down in winter when there is snow.

By bus: Andorra Direkt and other lines

The bus is an affordable and convenient option for those who prefer not to drive. Several companies run regular services to Andorra from major Spanish and French cities.

From Barcelona

Andorra Direkt and Novatel Bus operate direct services from Barcelona's Estació del Nord to the Estació Nacional d'Autobusos in Andorra la Vella. The journey takes approximately 3h30 and tickets cost 25-35 euros each way. There are several departures per day, with higher frequency at weekends and during high season.

From Madrid

There are overnight services from Madrid that arrive in Andorra the following morning. The journey takes between 7 and 8 hours. Prices are around 40-55 euros each way. Alsa operates this service regularly.

From Barcelona Airport

There is a direct bus service from Barcelona Airport T1 and T2 to Andorra, operated by Andorra Direkt. It is especially useful for travellers arriving in Barcelona on an international flight with Andorra as their final destination. The journey takes about 4 hours.

Book in advance: During ski season (January-February and Easter), buses fill up quickly. Book your seat online at least 48-72 hours ahead, especially for Fridays and Sundays.

Nearest airports

Andorra has no airport of its own. The nearest airports are:

Barcelona-El Prat Airport (BCN): The most commonly used airport for reaching Andorra. With connections to virtually every part of the world and the direct airport-Andorra bus service, it is the most convenient option for international travellers. Distance to Andorra: ~215 km.

Toulouse-Blagnac Airport (TLS): Very popular for travellers coming from northern Europe or the French Atlantic coast. Good connections across Europe. Distance to Andorra: ~180 km. Requires renting a car or taking the train to Ax-les-Thermes and then a bus.

Lleida-Alguaire Airport: The closest airport (about 100 km), but with very few regular scheduled connections. Only operational for charter flights during ski season and some seasonal international flights.

Reus Airport (near Tarragona): An alternative if you find cheap flights to Reus. From there, it is about 220 km via the AP-7 and N-145.

Border crossing

Andorra has two main border crossings: Sant Julià de Lòria (with Spain, via the N-145 from la Seu d'Urgell) and Pas de la Casa (with France, via the RN-22 from Ax-les-Thermes). Both have customs checks, though no passport control for EU citizens.

The controls on the Spanish border are stricter in the direction leaving Andorra: AEAT agents check purchases and luggage to ensure import allowances are not exceeded. During high season, especially on Sunday afternoons, return queues can be long.

Friday evenings and Sundays are peak times. The Sant Julià de Lòria border can have queues of 30-60 minutes on high-season Sundays. If possible, leave Andorra before 16:00 or after 20:00.

Getting around Andorra

Once in the Principality, getting around is straightforward. Andorra has a public bus network (Cooperativa Interurbana Andorrana) with lines connecting all the parishes at very affordable prices (1-2 euros per journey). The main lines link Andorra la Vella with La Massana, Escaldes, Encamp, Canillo and Sant Julià de Lòria.

A car remains the most flexible option for reaching the more remote corners of the Principality. Parking in central Andorra la Vella is paid, but there are large cheap public car parks 5-10 minutes' walk from the centre.

Practical tips

Snow chains in winter. During ski season, it is compulsory to carry snow chains (or approved winter tyres) to enter Andorra via the N-145. Checks are frequent and fines are substantial. If you rent a car, make sure the contract covers Andorra and that the vehicle is fitted with the necessary winter equipment.

GPS and roaming data. If you have a Spanish data plan, roaming in Andorra may not be included (Andorra is not in the EU). Download offline maps before you leave.

Documents. EU citizens only need their national ID card to enter Andorra. There is no passport control at either border crossing for European citizens.
