Andorra as a family destination
Andorra works very well as a destination for families with children of all ages. Its compact size makes getting around easy, its outdoor activity offering is wide and varied, and the combination of snow in winter with nature and adventure in summer makes it a destination that can be revisited at different times of year with entirely different experiences.
From a practical standpoint, Andorra is a safe, clean country with good infrastructure. Most restaurants offer a children's menu, hotels provide extra beds and cots, and the shops in the capital are well used to welcoming families with young children. It is not a destination that requires special preparation for travelling with kids — it simply works naturally.
Skiing with children: resorts and ski schools
Skiing is the family activity par excellence in Andorra during the snow season. The two major ski areas — Grandvalira and Pal Arinsal — have well-developed programmes specifically designed for children.
Grandvalira: the Soldeu ski garden
The Ski & Snowboard School at Soldeu has a ski garden programme for the youngest children (ages 3–5) with instructors who specialise in introducing kids to skiing. Children learn in a playful way within a protected area featuring fun elements integrated into the slopes. For children aged 6–12 there are beginner, intermediate and advanced classes organised by age and ability.
One of Grandvalira's greatest advantages for families: children under 6 ski free when accompanied by an adult. Those aged 7–12 benefit from significant price reductions.
Pal Arinsal: a quieter atmosphere
Pal Arinsal has a more intimate, less crowded feel than Grandvalira, making it particularly pleasant for families with young children who are taking their first steps on skis. The Arinsal Snowpark keeps older children (from age 10–12) entertained as they try out snowboards and freestyle modules.
Equipment rental: All Andorran ski resorts have shops renting children's equipment (skis, boots, helmets — compulsory for under-14s). Don't bother bringing gear from home: the rental shops in Soldeu and Arinsal stock high-quality equipment in all sizes.
Naturlandia: the adventure park of Sant Julià
Naturlandia is Andorra's largest nature and adventure park, situated at 1,600 metres altitude in the parish of Sant Julià de Lòria. Whatever the season, this park offers a full day of activities for families.
In winter
During the snow season, Naturlandia transforms into a snow park with activities that go beyond alpine skiing: a Nordic ski and ice-skating track, a tubing area (small inflatable rings for sliding down snow ramps), igloo building, horse-drawn sleigh rides and snowshoe walks for the youngest visitors. An excellent alternative to conventional skiing for very young children or families looking for a different snow experience.
In summer
Naturlandia's summer offer is perhaps its most complete. The AtmosFear — a zip line 2.7 km long, the longest in the Pyrenees — is the star attraction and an experience you won't forget. There is also: a rail bobsleigh run with valley views, an electric go-kart circuit, a children's climbing area, a farm with animals (cows, goats, horses), guided hikes and a picnic area. A full day out for the whole family.
Activities in summer and autumn
Outside the snow season, Andorra offers families a wide range of mountain activities suited to different ages and fitness levels.
Easy hiking: The routes around the Tristaina lakes (Ordino), the Vall del Madriu or the Riu Valira Nord are perfect for families with children from age 5–6. The paths are well signposted and most of the easier routes have surfaces that can be tackled in ordinary trainers.
Mountain biking: In summer, several chairlifts at Grandvalira and Pal Arinsal operate for bike transport, turning the pistes into downhill circuits for all ages. Children's bikes are available to rent at various points around the resorts.
Family canyoning: Some adventure activity companies in Andorra offer canyon descents adapted for families with children from age 8–10. The introductory level requires no prior experience and is conducted with full safety equipment.
Family-friendly restaurants
Andorra has a dining culture that is very family-oriented. Most restaurants in the Principality offer a children's menu (10–14 €) with varied options that go well beyond the classic steak-and-chips or pasta. In traditional bordas, children tend to be particularly welcome: the informal atmosphere and spacious rooms put everyone at ease.
For families with young children, the pizzerias and Italian restaurants in Andorra la Vella and Escaldes are a reliable, good-value option. Restaurants in the ski resort areas (Soldeu, Pas de la Casa) also have a solid family offer tailored to the skier's rhythm.
Family-friendly hotels
The best hotels for families in Andorra are aparthotels: they offer their own kitchen (ideal for preparing breakfasts or light dinners without going out), more space, and better value for money when travelling with two or more children.
In the Grandvalira area, Sport Apartments El Tarter has 2- and 3-bedroom apartments right on the slopes. In Pal Arinsal, Arinsal Apartments offers good family options. In Andorra la Vella, Aparthotel Marina has well-equipped apartments with a heated pool.
Travel cots: Most Andorran hotels have travel cots available on request at no extra charge. Confirm when booking to make sure one is available for you.
Practical tips
Altitude and young children. Andorra la Vella sits at 1,023 metres above sea level, while the ski resorts reach 1,600–2,900 metres. Young children generally adapt well to the altitude, but it is normal for them to feel a little more tired on the first day. Make sure they stay well hydrated.
Sun protection. On the snow, UV radiation is far stronger than at sea level. Apply SPF50 sunscreen to children from the very first thing in the morning and reapply throughout the day. Snow reflection multiplies exposure significantly.
Pharmacies. Andorra is not an EU member, but its pharmacies are well stocked with European brands. Medicine prices are similar to or slightly lower than in Spain.
