Hiking in Andorra: Essential Routes

The GRP, Coma Pedrosa, the coloured lakes of Tristaina… Andorra hides some of the most spectacular mountain landscapes in the Pyrenees.

Why hike in Andorra

Andorra covers 500 km2 of territory, and more than 90% of its surface lies above 1,000 metres in altitude. It is a high-mountain landscape where rock, fir trees, rivers and lakes follow one another at every bend in the path. For hiking enthusiasts, it is an extraordinary destination: reachable from Spain and France in just a few hours, with a well-marked and well-maintained trail network, and a range of difficulty levels that caters to everyone from the casual walker to the seasoned mountaineer.

Andorra's certified trail network covers more than 700 km of marked routes. The waymarking (red and white stripes for GR trails, yellow and white for PR trails) follows European standards and is reliable throughout the network. The Comú (local council) of each parish maintains the trails within its territory.

Easy and family-friendly routes

Ruta dels Estanys de Tristaina (Ordino)

One of the most photographed routes in Andorra. The three lakes of Tristaina (Primer, Segon i Tercer Estany) sit at 2,300–2,380 metres altitude, in the glacial cirque of Coll d'Ordino. The route from the Coma de la Grallera car park is about 5 km round trip, with 250 metres of elevation gain and a low-to-moderate difficulty. In summer, the contrast between the green of the alpine meadow, the deep blue of the lakes and the grey of the rocky outcrops is stunning.

Camí del Riu (La Massana – Andorra la Vella)

An accessible walk for any level of fitness along the banks of the Valira del Nord river. It connects La Massana with Andorra la Vella along a pleasant paved path, with several stretches through riverside forest. Ideal for families with pushchairs and for anyone looking for a relaxed stroll without significant elevation changes.

Ruta de los Comallemptes (Canillo)

A low-difficulty circular route through the Canillo valley, with spectacular views of the massifs surrounding Grandvalira. Around 7 km in a loop with moderate elevation gain, suitable for children aged 7–8 and above with some mountain experience.

Moderate difficulty routes

Circular del Siscaró (Ordino)

A circuit of around 10 km and 500 metres of positive elevation gain that winds through the meadows and forests of the Ordino parish. No major technical challenges, but enough climbing to make the muscles feel it by end of day. The views of the Ordino valley from the upper meadows rank among the finest in the Principality.

Ruta del Estany de l'Angonella (La Massana)

A high-mountain lake (2,250 m) surrounded by strikingly beautiful alpine scenery. About 8 km round trip from Arinsal, with around 650 metres of elevation gain. The ascent is steady but without particularly technical sections. Best done from June (when the snow melts) through to late October.

Challenging routes

Crestería del Casamanya (Ordino)

The Casamanya ridge (2,740 m) is a demanding route that rewards hikers with 360-degree views over the whole of Andorra. The ascent from Ordino involves around 1,100 metres of elevation gain and requires good physical fitness and appropriate footwear. There are no technical climbing difficulties, but the terrain is rough in the upper sections.

Coma Pedrosa: the roof of Andorra

Coma Pedrosa (2,942 metres) is the highest point in Andorra and, as such, a goal for experienced hikers who want to "stand on the roof". The standard route departs from Arinsal and passes through the Coma Pedrosa refuge (operated by the Club Alpí Andorrà, with capacity for 30 people), the llacs dels Pessons and the final ridge up to the geodesic summit marker.

It is a long route (14–16 km round trip, 1,400 m of elevation gain) best tackled with an early start to avoid the afternoon thunderstorms that are common in summer. The refuge makes it possible to complete the route over two days with a night in the mountains, turning it into a full high-mountain experience.

For Coma Pedrosa: Bring a map (paper or the Maps.me / Wikiloc app with the route downloaded offline), at least 2 litres of water, warm layers even if it is warm in the valley (wind at the summit can be fierce) and high-factor sunscreen. At altitude, UV radiation is much stronger.

GRP: the round trip of Andorra

The GRP (Camí de Ronda del Principat) is Andorra's great long-distance hiking route: 71 km that circle the entire Principality at altitude, linking the summits and border ridges with Spain and France. It can be completed in 5–7 days with nights in mountain refuges or in the villages of the Principality.

This is a route for experienced mountain hikers with excellent physical condition: the cumulative elevation gain exceeds 7,000 metres and some sections require navigation along ridges with no marked path. The reward is a unique perspective of Andorra — seeing it from above, from the edges of that small Pyrenean state wedged between France and Spain.

Practical tips

Season: High-mountain routes are accessible from late June to mid-October. In spring, many high-altitude trails still have snow. In winter, high-elevation routes require snow equipment (snowshoes or crampons).

Afternoon storms: In summer, thunderstorms can build quickly from around 2–3 pm. If you plan to be at the summit at that time, set off very early or plan your descent for before midday.

Apps and maps: Wikiloc has hundreds of Andorran routes with GPS. Andorra also has its official "Visit Andorra" app with downloadable routes. Trail signage on the ground is good, but technology provides an extra layer of safety.

Water: Andorra's mountain rivers and springs are generally of good quality, but for safety always carry your own water or use a membrane filter. Do not drink directly from streams that pass near livestock grazing areas.
